"Old Fort Massachusetts. Construction started in 1858, on the western tip of Ship Island, to protect the entrance to New Orleans through Rigolets Pass to Lake Pontchartrain. Designed for 48 cannon. Not completed due to the War Between the States, during which time the fort was occupied alternately by Federals and Confederates. Later a prison for some 4000 Confederate soldiers.
