Group photograph of African American school children and school teachers standing in front of the New Hymn School in Union community of Simpson County. Founder, first principal, and teacher of the school is Edgar Quitman Collins along with his wife Malinda Herron Collins, who also taught at the school. New Hymn School was founded around 1897 on the grounds of New Hymn Church. It was eventually consolidated into the Simpson County School System in the 1960s and renamed Simpson Central Elementary School. Photograph was donated by Peggy Collins Bowden, great-granddaughter of Edgar Quitman Collins, in 2017.
