"Fort Massachusetts On Ship Island At Biloxi, Miss. Fort Massachusetts was built by the Federal forces during the Civil War on Ship Island, about 12 miles of Biloxi. All of the cement, brick, etc., was brought from the East by the Federal Navy. The Island was also an encampment ground for Union troops during the same conflict.
