Examination of witnesses (copy), certified by Tho. [Thomas] Batchelor, Clerk of the Superior Court, Amite County: statement, Lewis H. Gardner, reporting that on September 14, 1814, seven Negroes were taken from his plantation in Louisiana, stating that even though he was not present at the time he believes John McConnell, Samuel McConnell, Blakely McConnell, Lewis McGee, John Lowery, and Robert Lowery to be the thieves; statement, John Lawrence, stating that while at the house of Mr. Broadway in Louisiana six or seven white men rode up accompanied by some Negroes, stating that the men told him (Lawrence) that they were "running property" which had been in the possession of Lewis Gardner, stating that Blakeley McConnell and Robert McConnell were two of the men of the company; statement, Tho. [Thomas] Torrance, stating that he was told by John McConnell that they (the McConnells) had gotten possession of property that had been in dispute "below the line" and in Gardner's possession; statement, William Roberts, stating that on September 14, 1814, Blakeley McConnell, John McConell, and Robert Lowery passed his house with seven Negroes which he was told were taken from Lewis Gardner, stating that the men said that no arms were taken in the yard or inside Gardener's house (see also October 4 and 8, 1814).
