Governor Ronnie Musgrove
Office of the Governor, PO Box 139
Jackson, MS 39205, USA

Subject: URGENT APPEAL

Dear Governor Musgrove:

I am writing to you in the name of Amnesty International. Through this
organization I have learned of the impending execution, scheduled for July
17, 2002, of Tracy Alan Hansen for the 1987 murder of Patrolman David Bruce
Ladner.

First I want to express all my sympathy for the family and friends of David
Bruce Ladner, and in no way do I seek to condone his murder or the
suffering it has caused. However, I am against the execution of Tracy
Hansen.

I am deeply concerned that the jury which condemned Tracy Hansen to the
death penalty was unaware of essential attenuating circumstances. That jury
was not informed that Hansen was the victim of psychological and physical
violence committed by members of his family when he was a child, nor of
Hansen's mental deficiency. Three persons who served on the jury during
Hansen's trial have indicated that they would not, or perhaps would not,
have voted for the death penalty if they had been aware of these
circumstances.

Tracy Hansen's co-defendant has received a sentence of life imprisonment.
Hansen has shown remorse over the death of Patrolman Ladner.

This execution will only damage public confidence in the U.S. criminal
justice system and reflect poorly on the State of Mississippi. Therefore I
urge you, Mr. Governor, to stop this execution and commute the death
sentence of Tracy Hansen..

                                                        Sincerely,
Pierre Goldstein
