Message: I wanted you to know that yesterday(10-31) in a Michigan state senate committee meeting that Senator Thaddeus McCotter(R-Livonia) chaired, he single handedly killed HB 5091 which was passed out of the House Oversight and Operations committee 5-0 and the Michigan House of Representatives 105-1. This bill would allow the display of our National Motto, "In God We Trust" in state and other public buildings including schools. Senator Dale Shugars, a member of the Local, Urban and State Affairs committee took issue with the Chairman for the measure to be in statute and not in resolution form as Mr. McCotter berated.

I asked Mr. McCotter during the meeting that the State of Mississippi's House of Representatives, Senate and Governor all agreed on a mandatory bill earlier in the year, were they all wrong?
Mr. McCotter mentioned that the "progressive" state of Mississippi was wrong. To which many people in the room laughed...but not I.

Governor, Senator McCotter was not only attacking the need for placement in state statue for our national motto, he was attacking the reputation of Mississippi.

Quite frankly, after personally studying for the priesthood at the Vatican's North American College/Angelicum University- and trying to make our society better by many years of public service, I have never- ever- seen such a wholly unjustifiable definace of the public interest. Mr. McCotter after his state senate term is attempting to run for Congress next year in a GOP primary. Is this the type of leader you want in Washington? Is this the type of leadership Senator Lott wants in Washington?

If you have any questions, feel free to call me direct at the Capitol later today.

In your service,

Mark Powell
