Message: Governor Musgrover:

We are the owners of Aunt V's Candies in Gulfport, Mississippi. For the year of 2001 we have a State Tax debt of $910.13. Throughout the year I contacted the State to make payments on our debt. We were told the State does not take payments. It would seem to me as a business owner, if you have outstanding debt in your accounts receivable it would be in your best interest to accept payments. As a business owner I would much rather accept payments, have that revenue than nothing at all. I believe you should, and do run the State as a business, you have to make money. Why would it be so difficult to accept payments? We pay so many taxes it is unreal. Last year our tax debt with the Federal Government was $9000 dollars alone, not including State, employee taxes ect. The Federal Government takes payments, they see it better to have the revenue from payments than nothing at all. We are not trying to get out of our debt, we would just like to see some options for the peop!
le of Mississippi. The average person does not have over $900 in the bank for a one time payment. In the letter we received the State is threatening to take away our homestead exemption. To us this doesn't make sense, obviously we are struggling to pay the debt, so lets increase our monthly expenses, now that will really help us and others pay the debt.

I will be contacting your office for a meeting to discuss this matter further.

Sincerely,

Jeff and Cheryl Blackstock
