Message:
Dear Governor,

I am writing to express my opposition to the execution of Tracy Hansen, scheduled for 17 July this year in the state of Mississippi.

First of all I wish to express my deep sympathy for the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Bruce Ladner, for whose murder Tracy Hansen has been convicted. The crime committed by Tracy Hansen can in no way be excused, having caused untold and needless suffering.

Notwithstanding this I, like millions of people worldwide and 111 nation states, am fundamentally opposed to the death penalty, regardless of the crime committed. Article 3 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that ‘Everyone has the right to life …’. The death penalty represents a fundamental violation of that right as well as being an affront to human dignity. It does not provide a solution to violent crime.

I also believe that there are some mitigating circumstances surrounding the case, which may not have been fully taken into account. These include:

	Tracy Hansen’s background of mental abuse as a child and his mental impairment, evidence which was not presented to the trial jury;
	The fact that Tracy Hansen’s co-defendant received a life sentence for the crime; and
	 The considerable remorse shown by Tracy Hansen for the crime in the intervening years.

For all of the reasons outlined above I urge that you grant clemency to Tracy Hansen.

Yours sincerely

Peter Kinrade

Cc: His Excellency, Mr J Thomas Schieffer, Ambassador, Chancery: Moonah Place, Yarralumla ACT 2600, Australia.
