Subject: Call A Moratorium On Death Penalty
Message:

Date: 03/23/2000

Dear Governor Fordice:

Please follow the example of Governor Ryan of Illinois and call
a moratorium on executions in Mississippi until there is no
possibility of killing innocent prisoners.

As you well know, the death penalty has resulted in the killing
of numerous innocent victims throughout the United States. It
takes vision and political courage for an official in your
position to stand against the emotional pressures brought by
prosecutors, legislators, and bereaved families.

But a moratorium is the only thing that can prevent the
execution of innocents and insure that mercy and humaneness are
the standards of American law.

The death penalty is cruel, it is unnecessary, and it is
inhumane. It should not be used while we search for a better
way to punish criminals and protect society than murdering those
found guilty.

I plead with you, Governor Fordice, to show vision and courage,
and stop executions until all possible doubts are removed and a
better way to punish and deter can be found.

Sincerely,

Lauralee C Carbone
