Psalm 33:19

To deliver their soul from death,
And to keep them alive in famine.

When the body dies the soul remains very much alive. God delivers the soul of the God-fearing at death from death. Death cannot steal the soul and spirit away from God.

The people who really fear God, and God alone, are promised to have Him overlooking their affairs. Death may be pressing in on them but God is able to deliver them from death. Our God is still in the miracle business. He can let us be drawn right up to the gates of death and then choose to deliver us in order to show off His great strength and mercy. The clutches of death are no match to the delivering power of our God. God is the great Deliverer!

Famine may be threatening everyone in the world including the people of God, but God is able to keep them alive if He so chooses. He used Joseph to prepare for seven years of famine and it was the hand of God through Joseph who kept the whole world sustained during this time. In another famine He fed one of His prophets, Elijah, by the hands of a raven and a dying widow. You heard it right, a dying widow. He didn't use the healthiest widow in the land, He chose a dying one.(1 Kings 17:8-24) Just like God used to win wars by using the singers and dancers instead of the warriors (e.g. 2 Chronicles 20:17,21,22). God commands our total allegiance and worship, He is a jealous God. It angers Him when we lift other gods before Him, beside Him, or behind Him. It truly is a spiritual thing.

Bo Sullivan
