Sessum's wife, Mary, outside the jail. A March 12, 1968, Hattiesburg American article reported she "had tried unsuccessfully to enter the courtroom carrying a .38 revolver in her purse." Percy Quinn, Cecil's defense attorney, said she carried it "for purposes of self-defense."
