This endorsement took place at 9:00 a.m. at the War Memorial in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. "This is a great honor for me," stated Congressman Shows. "We must support our veterans in Mississippi and across America. Our veterans have put their lives on the line so that we can stand here today. I commit to continue working hard in Congress on issues such as providing the best health care possible, and enhancing and updating the great Montgomery GI Bill. To have these men and women stand with me is an honor." Congressman Shows, called "Mr. Veterans Affairs" by Congressman Gene Taylor, is also a recent recipient of the prestigious "L. Mendel Rivers Award of Excellence" by the American Air Force Sergeants Association during their national convention in New Orleans. More than 1,000 members of the Air Force Sergeants Association heard Shows keynote their convention and watch on as he received an award previously awarded to both former-Mississippi Congressman Sonny Montgomery, and United States Senator John McCain. The Veterans of Foreign Wars is one of America's largest associations of men and women who have served in the American Armed Forces during times of war. The endorsement from the VFW PAC demonstrates Congressman Shows' work on behalf of America's veterans and military retirees. "Congressman Shows has a strong record of supporting veterans in Congress," stated MS VFW Commander Walter Slayton. "Congressman Shows is a friend of veterans." Congressman Shows, a member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee is the author of the "Keep Our Promise to America's Military Retirees Act," that has garnered 306 cosponsors in the House including Congressman JC Watts of Oklahoma. Identical Senate legislation is cosponsored by Senator John McCain of Arizona. On Wednesday, October 11, 2000 the House passed a major expansion of military health care for the nation's 1.3 million Medicare-eligible military retirees, family members and survivors. The Senate has also passed the bill and the President has indicated his intentions to sign the bill. There are key portions in the bill of the Shows "Keep Our Promise to America's Military Retirees Act" such as allowing military retirees to remain in Tricare for life, (currently they are dropped at age 65 and have to depend solely on Medicare), and veterans and military retiree health care will become an entitlement instead of an annual appropriations. "Although relatively new in tenure, Congressman Shows presence has been extremely strong and influential," stated James D. Staton, Executive Director of the Air Force Sergeants Association. "In particular, there is Congressman Shows work in areas of restoring the broken military health care commitment for our nation's oldest military retirees and the need to present our service members with a viable educational benefit. Congressman Shows actions have marked him as a leader who cares about enlisted people of all of the Armed Force's components." Congressman Shows has also introduced legislation to enhance the Sonny Montgomery G.I. Bill. Cost of living adjustments have not maintained the pace needed to keep up with inflation. This bill works to bring support for veterans wanting a college education in line with current tuition costs. It also creates a cost of living adjustment to keep tuition stipends up to date. Congressman Montgomery stood with Congressman Shows on the day this legislation was introduced. "Standing with and supporting our veterans and military retirees is an issue that belongs in the halls of Congress, and across our land," stated Congressman Shows. "We must keep America's promise for those who gave their careers to defending democracy." On Tuesday, October 17, 2000 Congressman Shows will Manage the Floor Debate of the World War II Memorial Bill at the United States Capitol in Washington DC. This bill expresses the sense of Congress on the propriety and expeditious construction of the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall in the Nation's Capitol (EACH SIDE OF THE AISLE APPOINTS A FLOOR MANAGER FOR KEY PIECES OF LEGISLATION - CONGRESSMAN BOB STUMP (AZ) WILL BE THE OTHER MANAGER) --- ### --- VOTE NOVEMBER 7, 2000 Paid for by Friends of Ronnie Shows - Attachment Filename: C:\archives\governor\mail\Governor Musgrove\_attach\Congressman Shows Endorsed by VFW PAC\Mime.822
