Based on standardized test scores, graduation rates and other factors, schools are labeled as "underperforming," "maintaining," "improving" or excelling." http://www.ecs.org/e-Connection-ws Forty WYOMING teachers will be given the chance to use research to influence state education policy through the Wyoming Teacher Policy Institute. Participants will conduct research studies in their classrooms and schools, and share their findings in discussions at the local, state and national levels. http://www.ecs.org/e-Connection-ws ------------------------ GOOD READS ------------------------ Despite the problems and challenges they face, leaders of big-city school districts are generally optimistic about the future of URBAN SCHOOLS, according to a survey released by the Council of the Great City Schools. http://www.ecs.org/e-Connection-gr A new report by the KnowledgeWorks Foundation examines the cost effectiveness of SMALLER SCHOOLS. According to the report, research shows that small schools are a wise investment, especially when education costs are measured by the number of graduates produced rather than by all students passing through a school system. http://www.ecs.org/e-Connection-gr The U.S. Department of Education has produced a reference manual to the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT. For each section of the law, the manual details the purpose of the program, what is new in the law, how the program works, key requirements, how performance is measured and key activities and responsibilities for state education departments. http://www.ecs.org/e-Connection-gr ------------------------ ECS NEWS ------------------------ The ECS FALL STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING will take place December 9-11 in New Orleans. http://www.ecs.org/e-Connection-en ECS is seeking nominations for its ANNUAL AWARDS, including the James Bryant Conant Award, the ECS Chairman's Award and the ECS State Innovation Award. The awards will be presented at the 2003 National Forum on Education Policy in Denver.
