From: Debby Wakeham <WakehamD@methodistchurch.org.uk> To: RM.GOV_PO.GOV_MAIL Created: 7/8/2002 6:39 AM Subject: URGENT, please read Message: Dear Governor Musgrove I write urgently to ask you to exercise your power of clemency in the case of Tracy Hansen, who is scheduled to be executed on 17 July 2002. Information has come to light that he suffered an appalling catalogue of abuse from his mother, starting from before he was born when she tried to abort him. He was subsequently subjected to sustained torture: beating, burning, being forced to eat hot peppers with Tabasco sauce, denied food, etc. Not surprisingly, he turned to drugs to blot out his pain. I do not wish to minimise the enormity of the crime of which he was convicted but, in view of the compelling mitigating circumstances, I ask you to exercise clemency and commute his death sentence to life. Three jurors have sworn affidavits stating that they would have voted for life without parole instead of death, had they known about Tracy Hansen's terrible childhood and brain damage. At the time of the shooting, he was under the influence of a dominant and abusive woman who has herself received a life sentence for this crime. He has subsequently expressed deep remorse in letters to his victim's daughter. He had an inadequate trial; his lawyers failed to present the crucial mitigating evidence that, had it been heard, would have resulted in the three jurors mentioned above voting for a life sentence. Please, in the name of justice and humanity, commute his death sentence to life. Thank you for reading this e-mail.
