Governor Ronnie Musgrove,
My name is Jeni Davis. I have lived in Columbus, MS for 10 years.
Yesterday, I received a letter from the attorneys for Kerr-McGee, as did
several Columbus residents. This letter is offering us a settlement for
polutting our air for several years. I am very dissappointed with their
approach. They are offering $750.00 to people within a certain mile radius
and $500.00 to people in another radius plus an amount just over $2000.00
to home owners as their property may have depreciated. Also, if we sign
this "release form" we get this money and a free medical screening. The
letter also states that our neighbors can make copies of this form and be
included. Basically, this is all it says. No information covering the
situation or how serious it is was included. I am sure you are aware of
the other areas of Mississippi that have encountered problems with this
plant. This is a unusually high number of citizens and I am wondering,
although there is no given information, is this not equal to a natural
disaster? I am asking you to please have this investigated. How can they
expect people to accept this amount, release all their right to claim,
then get a medical screening, especially with the risk of cancer this type
of thing causes? I think these tactics are unethical and very rude due to
the lack of provided information. Did they continue to contaminate of
environment even after they were in lawsuits? We weren't aware of this and
do not even have legal advice or a representative.If so, this is
comparable to a felony! Thank you very much for this web-site and the
opportunity it allows for concerned citizens to be able to express their
concerns.
