PACE, FL 32571-2802 (850) 994-0416 (HM) (850) 623-7602 X35 (WK) Office of the Governor Post Office Box 139 Jackson, MS 39205 Dear Governor Musgrove: On behalf of over 200 USS POLLUX (AKS-2 & AKS-4) Reunion Association members, I cordially invite you to attend our 7th annual reunion that will be held in your great state of Mississippi from Oct. 14, 2001 through Oct. 18, 2001. The reunion will be held at the Holiday Inn Coliseum, Biloxi, MS. More than 75 shipmates plus their spouses and guests have already signed up to attend and we expect to have more than 250 people in attendance. Our association is made up of shipmates who served aboard the USS POLLUX from 1941 through 1968. USS POLLUX (AKS-2) was acquired by the U.S. Navy on 16 January 1941 and commissioned 6 May 1941. On 18 February 1942 she ran aground during a storm off St. Lawrence Harbor, Newfoundland at Luans Point and sank. There were 141 survivors. However 83 shipmates lost their lives that fateful day. Forty-eight of the survivors are still alive and at least ten of them have attended one or more of our previous reunions. We expect at least five AKS-2 shipmates to be in attendance in Las Vegas. Several books have been written about this tragedy. One of the books written by Cassie Brown is entitled STANDING INTO DANGER. Another book written by Henry Strauss who was a survivor of the sinking was published in the Readers Digest in April 1989 and was entitled Heroes of the Frozen Cliffs. A Canadian newspaper man has written a screenplay about the disaster and is presenting it to major TV and Movie Producers. His screenplay not only looks at the actual disaster, but also lo! oks at the work of the brave Newfoundlers who risked their lives to save those desperate sailors. USS POLLUX (AKS-4) was rushed into commission on 27 April 1942 to replace the AKS-2. She served proudly during WWII, Korea and Vietnam winning several battle stars. She helped evacuate the first POW’s to be freed by our troops in the Manila area at the end of WWII. She was decommissioned on 31 December 1968 by CAPTAIN CHARLES N. FLITTON. Captain Flitton will be in attendance at our Biloxi reunion.
