Box 139 Jackson, MS 39205 Dear Governor Musgrove, Did you know the tobacco companies are spending a record $26 million a day to market their deadly products? It's no wonder 2,000 more kids become addicted smokers every day. One in three will die prematurely. It's outrageous! Despite this tremendous toll, tobacco products remain virtually unregulated and most states are not keeping their promise to use tobacco settlement money for tobacco prevention. You can be a leader in reducing tobacco's toll. These policies can protect our kids and save lives: Funding tobacco prevention programs. They are proven to reduce smoking and save up to three dollars in health costs for every dollar spent. Regulating tobacco products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration needs authority over tobacco products so it can stop marketing to kids and protect consumers. This can't happen without an act of Congress. Increasing tobacco taxes. This win-win solution raises new revenue and reduces smoking - especially among teens. Some new revenue should be used to prevent teen smoking and help smokers quit. Supporting the federal tobacco lawsuit. This lawsuit seeks to hold the tobacco industry accountable for its wrongdoing and stop its harmful practices, such as marketing to kids. There is much elected officials can do to protect our kids from Big Tobacco. I look forward to your reply and urge you to make preventing tobacco use a centerpiece of your agenda. Sincerely, Sheila Ryan 8324 Hwy 15 N Ecru, MS 38841-9749 sryan@pcsd.k12.ms.us - Attachment Filename: C:\archives\governor\mail\Governor Musgrove\_attach\Protect Kids from Big Tobacco 7\Mime.822
