1. This important policy brief series focuses on state policy options
that have the potential to improve children's economic security by
increasing family income. More specifically, the series examines
policies that seek to increase family income by encouraging,
supporting, and rewarding work. Follow the link below to read the
   series introduction:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Inadequate nutrition, environmental toxins, diminished interaction
due to maternal depression, trauma and abuse, lower quality child
care, and parental substance abuse. These are some of the risk factors
associated with poverty in early childhood. Follow the link below to
learn why the first years of life are more important than had been
thought for children's emotional and intellectual development, and why
millions of children in the United States are at developmental risk:

3. Did you know that America's children are almost twice as likely to live
in poverty as Americans in any other age group (16 percent compared to
9-10 percent for working and retired adults)? Follow the link below to
   learn more:

4. Americans have long felt ambivalent toward those in poverty and who
should qualify for government assistance. LynNell Hancock, author of
Hands to Work: The Stories of Three Families Racing the Welfare Clock
and assistant professor in the Graduate School of Journalism at
Columbia University, discusses the various issues and shifting
attitudes of both policymakers and the public in responding to the
poor. Hancock is a member of NCCP's Council of Advisors, an advisory
board that helps guide the work of NCCP. Follow the link below to view
