"In the house shown in the photograph above, located in Amite County, now known as the Butler home, it is said, here Gail Borden, who was living there in 18--, trying to regain his health, worked out the formula for condensed milk. Using the milk from a cow, that his host had placed at his disposal, and with only crude implements he cooked down, or evaporated the milk on a kitchen-'wood'-stove producing the first condensed milk. It was from this humble beginning that a great industry came into being, permitting milk to be so preserved that it could be kept or shipped great distances, a truly great achievement eventually accounting for all the condensaries now operated."
