"The New Capitol, Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi. This handsome and imposing structure, construction on which was started March 1901, was completed in 1903. The stone used in the building is principally Bedford limestone and granite. Interior is finished with marble - ten different varieties - including Blue Vermont; Tennessee Gray, Pink and Knoxville; Georgia Creole, Verd Antique and White; Belgian Black; African Numidian; Swiss, Alps Green. Imitation or art marble (scagliola) has been used extensively, the varieties being Pavanozza, Sienna, Breccia Violet, Numidian, Rose Claire, Campayne, St. Baum, Egyptian and Verd Antique. The dome is surmounted by a copper eagle, heavily gold plated. This eagle stands eight feet high and has a wing spread of fifteen feet."
