Hord, Lida Collection PI/2019.0010

This is a collection of ninety-seven photo negatives taken in 1978 by Photographic Laboratory Technician Lida Hord, with assistance from Duplicating Equipment Operator Dennis Lawrence. The two employees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History were granted access to the rooftop of the Walter Sillers State Office Building in Jackson, Mississippi, and photographed the downtown area from that vantage point. The collection also includes two interior office photographs of Lida Hord working at a desk in the basement of the Charlotte Capers Archives and History Building.

Image Arrangement and Numbering

The photographic curator numbered the negatives in the Lida Hord Collection in the order in which they were received.

Technical Details

Digital Photographs: The original scans of the Lida Hord Collection were made by the Reformatting Section staff in 2023, according to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Board of Trustees' approved imaging procedures, following ANSI/AIIM recommended practice. The black-and-white photographic negatives were scanned as uncompressed, 8-bit Grayscale TIFF files enlarged 150-200 percent to roughly 3500 x 5500 pixels at 600 pixels per inch.

Conversion: The Electronic Archives staff converted the TIFF files to Zoomify JPEG tile sets for Internet access in 2025.

Distinct from copyright, which concerns the owner of the intellectual content, publicity and/or privacy rights apply to individuals who did not sign a contract or release form giving the creator the legal right to use his/her likeness or personal information. Publicity and privacy rights also differ from copyright in that there are not exemptions for Fair Use or educational purposes. These rights are not regulated by federal law but by state statute and common law. When using images from this collection it is the patron's responsibility to determine whether privacy and publicity rights issues may exist and consider the mitigating factors.
