Courtland Plantation (Adams County, Miss.) Records, 1854-185... Z/2311.000/S

This collection consists of two journals from Courtland Plantation during the years 1854 through 1859. The first of the two bound volumes (January 9, 1854 - July 15, 1855) was photographed before it was loaned for exhibit at the Museum of Mississippi History and is accessible online in the MDAH Digital Archives. The second volume (February 23, 1857 - June 5, 1859) has not yet been digitized and can be viewed in the William F. Winter Archives and History Building.

Courtland Plantation was located in Adams County, Mississippi, on Sandy Creek, about fifteen miles from Second Creek. During the years the journals were kept, the plantation was run and owned by Adeline H. Swayze Baker. The volumes are identical in content and format. They primarily document daily activities of enslaved people, with tables noting names, dates, work assignments, and health concerns such as injury, illness, and childbirth. The pages also contain daily weather reports and tallies of animals and harvested crops.
