    RE: PLANETFEEDBACK INCIDENT NUMBER 534411

Dear Ms. Strossen,

I'm writing to express my displeasure with public money being used to support artists or museums that create and display offensive or sacrilegious art. I find it appalling that my money would be used to fund something the majority of this nation would consider reprehensible.

An artist's right to free speech and expression means that they can create whatever they want. It does not mean they have the right to receive money from the government to do it. And, if a museum is going to take support from the government, it should show discretion and not display works of art most would find offensive. If the museum cannot show common decency, it should not receive taxpayer money.

It has reached the point where artists are trying to outdo each other and reach new levels of offensiveness just so they can draw attention to themselves. Well, if that is what they want to do, then let them do it; but not on the taxpayer's dime.

There should be some sort of standard established. If the majority of taxpayers would find it offensive, public money should not be used for its creation, and publicly-funded museums should not display it.

To be honest, this makes me furious. And, just so you know, this issue is very important to me. I think my opinion has a chance to make a difference on this issue, and there's a real good chance I'll talk to other people about this.

I think your leadership on this issue could be very helpful, so I hope you'll listen carefully to what I have to say.

Sincerely,
quen@netdoor.com
