The Defenders: How Lawyers Protected the Movement, Productio... Series 2977
This series consists of audio and video files of interviews produced between March 2021 and February 2022 by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, in association with RED SQUARED, for the award-winning 2022 documentary The Defenders: How Lawyers Protected the Movement. Attorneys Reuben Anderson, Fred Banks, Martha Bergmark, Marian Wright Edelman, Melvyn R. Leventhal, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, Jacqualyn Brown Staffney, and Bennie G. Thompson described their efforts to challenge discrimination in the South by representing African Americans in Mississippi courts in the years leading up to and during the Civil Rights Movement. Hundreds of lawyers were inspired by their efforts to work in the state and transform its legal infrastructure. The original MPG, MP3, MP4, and WAV files were converted to MP3 and MP4 files for Internet access.
