Eudora Welty Digital Archives Correspondence

The correspondence by Welty in the Eudora Welty Collection spans over seventy years and includes approximately 5,000 letters written to more than sixty correspondents. Scans of many of these pieces and Welty-related collections - the John Fraiser Robinson Papers, the Welty-Millar Letters, and a Eudora Welty Letter to Margaret Millar - are available online in the Digital Archives. Most of the correspondence from others to Welty was not digitized due to copyright and privacy concerns. Digitized items that may be protected by copyright and privacy laws and original materials that were not scanned can be viewed in the William F. Winter Archives and History Building.

Eudora Welty Collection Series 29a. Correspondence by Eudora Welty

This series includes letters written by Eudora Welty to childhood and college friends, editors and journalists, and influential writers of the twentieth century. The bulk of the correspondence was written to five individuals: Mary Lou Aswell, who was a fiction editor at Harper's Bazaar when she and Welty met; Frank Lyell, a lifelong Welty friend from Jackson, Mississippi; Kenneth Millar, an established mystery writer who wrote under the pen name of Ross Macdonald; John F. Robinson, Welty's friend from high school with whom she was romantically involved; and Diarmuid Russell, Welty's agent and close friend. Scans of items that may be protected by copyright and privacy laws were separated into a "Series 29a … Internal Only" group and are limited to access inside the William F. Winter Archives and History Building.

John Fraiser Robinson Papers

The John Fraiser Robinson Papers include twenty-one items of correspondence from Eudora Welty to Robinson, beginning with a telegram in July 1949 and ending with a letter in October 1984, among other undated letters. Occasionally Welty enclosed a newspaper clipping; these clippings were not digitized due to copyright concerns. Robinson and Welty were lifelong friends who also encouraged each other's pursuits in writing and publishing. This correspondence serves as a complement to letters written by Welty to John Robinson found in the Eudora Welty Collection (Z/0301.000/S), Series 29a: Correspondence by Eudora Welty.

Welty (Eudora) Letter to Margaret Millar, 1975

This is a single letter written by Eudora Welty to Margaret Millar on June 22, 1975. In it, Welty expresses gratitude for Ken and Margaret Millar's hospitality during the Santa Barbara Writers Conference, reminisces about a luncheon they gave her at the Coral Casino beach club in Santa Barbara, and discusses her visit in Sausalito, California, to consult on the editing of the episode of The Writer in America film series devoted to her work. This letter serves as a complement to those written by Welty to Margaret Millar found in the Eudora Welty Collection (Z/0301.000/S), Series 29a: Correspondence by Eudora Welty.

Welty-Millar Letters

This collection consists of twenty letters, arranged chronologically, written by Eudora Welty to Kenneth Millar between May 1970 and October 1981. The correspondence documents the friendship of Welty and Millar and reflects Welty's dedication to the craft of writing. With the exception of one dated June 3, 1971, postmarked Lexington, Kentucky, Welty sent all the letters from her residence in Jackson, Mississippi. They serve as a complement to those written by Welty to Kenneth Millar found in the Eudora Welty Collection (Z/0301.000/S), Series 29a: Correspondence by Eudora Welty.
