Annual Report

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is responsible for providing a safe intermodal transportation network that is planned, designed, constructed, and maintained in an effective, cost-efficient, and environmentally sensitive manner. The annual report (July–June) provides a summary of major projects and financial management of the agency. The Department of Archives and History has electronic (PDF) copies of the report from 2001. For years 2004-2007, an Addendum, containing Automobile Operating Costs, Maintenance Expenditures, Construction Expenditures, and Contracts Awarded, was also published to accompany the Annual Report.

Appalachian Development Highway System Booklets

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) generated booklets describing the route and estimating the expenses for completing the Appalachian Development Highway System in Mississippi. The route consists of U.S. Highway 78 from the Alabama state line through Fulton to Tupelo and then Mississippi Highway 6 from Tupelo through Pontotoc and Oxford to U.S. Interstate Highway 55 at Batesville. Each booklet contains segment maps and descriptions, roadway and bridge cross-sections, and cost estimate tables. The series consists of maps of Mississippi cities and towns in varying detail. All show roads and water features. Many also show buildings and other structures. Corridor System Status Reports, 1974-1979

The series consists of reports of remaining mileage and estimated costs to complete highway corridors required to be converted to four lanes by the year 2000. Up-to-date maps of the corridor construction process are included in each report. County Highway Maps (Annotated), 1938-1996

The series consists of general highway maps of the counties used as working field maps to record additions and changes to the road networks. Functional Classification System Maps, 1950-2014

The series consists of maps that show the different classes of highways and major roads and the Federal Aid number for each, divided into rural (county maps) and urban (city and county maps) classifications. A 1970-1990 National Highway Functional Classification and Needs Study features county maps and a report on Mississippi's results. A 1991 atlas that includes Highways Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) data samples contains both city and county maps. Gaming Impact Infrastructure Program Maps, 1994-2004

The series consists of Mississippi highway maps displaying casino locations and road and traffic improvements in areas of the state impacted by the gaming industry, especially Philadelphia, Tunica County, Greenville, Vicksburg, Natchez, and the Gulf Coast. The Department of Archives and History has the original paper Gaming Impact Infrastructure Program 1994 map and electronic (PDF) copies of other maps dated between 1995 and 2004 scanned by MDOT.

Great River Road Cost Estimate Reports, 1977, 1980

The series consists of reports on estimated costs to complete Mississippi's portion of the Great River Road, dating 1977 and 1980. The Great River Road is a National Scenic Byway that stretches along the Mississippi River from its headwaters in Canada to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. The state of Mississippi's portion runs for approximately 350 miles along U.S. Highway 61, Miss. Highway 1, and a small section of U.S. Highway 49. Each report contains segment maps and descriptions, roadway and bridge cross sections, and cost estimate tables. The series consists of guides and maps of hurricane evacuation routes from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and from Louisiana and a chart of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean basins that can be used to track approaching hurricanes. Maintenance and Work Order Construction Maps, 1921-1980

The series consists of maps showing segments of road maintained by the state with federal aid dollars. The 1967 atlas is arranged in numerical order by district, with maps alphabetized by county within each district; the other atlases are arranged alphabetically by county. The 1967 and 1975 atlases include database printouts for each county detailing the mileage, year and cost of construction, and duration of previous and ongoing maintenance projects for each road segment. Maintenance Mileage Inventory Ledgers, 1926-2003, n.d.

The series consists of ledgers of miles maintained by the Highway Department. The ledgers typically contain entries for county, section, road, limits, type of road, total miles, federal aid miles, and non-federal aid miles. Rough county road maps and more recent Mississippi highway mileage maps are also included. The Department of Archives and History has electronic (PDF) copies of the 1968 and 1986 ledgers, an undated ledger, a 2003 Highway Mileage Map of Mississippi, two undated Mississippi maps, and 464 county maintenance maps dated between 1959 and 1980, all scanned by MDOT.

Maps (Annotated with Federal Aid and Maintenance), 1926, 1946-2001

The series consists of general highway maps annotated to show the highways and roads that were constructed or maintained with federal aid highway moneys, as well as those analyzed by the Highways Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). The statewide maps show route sections and numbers for federal aid primary and federal aid secondary routes. The maps dated 1926-1927 (labeled "1921" in the PDF file names) form part of an atlas issued by the federal Department of Agriculture that shows federal aid routes in every state (although California is missing from this atlas). Mississippi Gulf Coast Aerial Photographs, August 30, 2005

These are two hundred and thirty-two (232) grayscale scans produced by MDAH from two hundred and thirty-one (231) aerial photographs taken August 30, 2005, along Mississippi's Gulf Coast and a photocopy of the flight order map that documents the flight paths taken during this photography mission. The map includes details like flight numbers, directions, and photograph numbers, which can be used to identify the objects captured in the images. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) ordered the aerial photographs to plan highway repairs following Hurricane Katrina. The original photographs are part of Series 152: Department of Transportation Aerial Photographs, 1936-2005. The photocopied map is from MDOT Series 2625: Aerial Photograph Indexes and Flight Order Maps, 1960-2006.

Mississippi River Parkway Commission Files, 1953-1975, 1985

The series consists of correspondence, minutes, general files, legislation, reports, and published material concerning the Mississippi River Parkway and the Great River Road. Some of the reports contain items such as photographs (including aerial photographs), color postcards, road maps and highway maps. Also included is a set of fold-out corridor maps of the entirety of the Great River Road. Office of State Aid Road Construction Annual Report

The Office of State Aid Road Construction administers Mississippi's State Aid Road Program to assist Mississippi's 82 counties in the construction and maintenance of secondary, non-state owned roads and bridges. The State Aid Engineer presents an annual summary of operations each fiscal year (July–June) to the governor and legislature. The series consists of maps depicting areas where federal or state funded construction or repair projects took place or were proposed. Public Lands Maps, 1955-1971, 1977, 1981, 2004-2008, n.d.

The series consists of maps highlighting national forests, reservoirs, and Indian treaty boundaries in Mississippi. Some maps also have federal- and state-aid routes and urban boundaries highlighted. Maps dating 1958-1964 and 1977-1981 show forest routes and boundaries only. Maps dated 2004-2008 feature Indian treaty boundaries with handwritten notes. Also included are two data sets from a 1955-1960 public lands study. The first data set describes total road mileage in Mississippi public lands, broken down by location. The second data set describes unpaved road mileage in national forests, broken down by highway commissioner’s district. This series consists of standard U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps used for information and planning by the Mississippi Highway Department, later identified as the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). Counties, parishes, and cities of Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee also appear on the sheets. The Department of Archives and History has paper maps created between 1941 and 1981 and electronic (PDF) copies of nine hundred thirty 1950-1995 maps scanned by MDOT and arranged alphanumerically by file name.
